Steering Team

The CMS Steering Team (ST) was formally established in December 2003 to serve as the primary working group in the development of the CMS. In June 2005, the Steering Team composition changed to include a broader representation of organizations on campus. In July 2005, the Steering Team was officially endorsed (pdf) by members of Cornell senior administration. The ST is led by the CMS Manager and is comprised of the CMS Director, a Lead Advisor, and representatives of the Environmental Compliance Office, Environmental Health & Safety, and representative colleges and divisions. The ST is responsible for principally developing and implementing the CMS. Specific responsibilities of the CMS ST include:

  • Defining the scope of the CMS
  • Actively participating in monthly Steering Team meetings
  • Reviewing and inputting to the CMS objectives and targets (CMS Element 6)
  • Reviewing and inputting to pertinent key deliverables and products throughout the development process such as gap assessments, procedures, action plans, etc.
  • Participating on working groups
  • Training to be CMS auditors and conducting CMS conformance audits (CMS Element 15)
  • Conducting periodic reviews of the CMS and recommending improvements to Senior Administration (CMS Element 16)

The team meets on a monthly basis, typically during the last week of each month. Following are the mission and vision for the Steering Team for the Planning Phase of the CMS development. The mission for the Development Phase is currently being finalized.

Cornell Management System Steering Team Phase I - Planning Mission

We are Cornell professionals representing the environmental compliance assurance interest of the University. Our purpose is to develop the Cornell Management System for the Environment and Chemical Management (CMS) in accordance with the CMS Work Plan and the Environmental Compliance and Voluntary Environmental Initiatives Policy. Our purpose during the planning phase of this project will include:
  • Evaluating proposed pilots to ensure they are representative of the University,
  • Developing a communication strategy and timing that keeps stakeholders appropriately informed and develops support for the CMS,
  • Finalizing CMS elements that will meet the University's needs,
  • Completing a needs assessment to understand what systems we have today and where we will need to make changes, and
  • Developing an implementation plan that will guide our future efforts.
These decisions and products will assist the Steering Team in developing the CMS and will help to ensure the success of the pilots and units we represent during implementation.

Cornell Management System Steering Team Phase I - Planning Vision

The Cornell Management System Steering Team will develop a plan to create and maintain a CMS that is a flexible, supportive, and user-friendly management system that integrates environmental, safety, and health programs into everyday decisions and practices of the Cornell community of faculty, students, and staff.
