CMS Elements
The CMS Elements are derived from ISO 14001:1996 Environmental Management Systems Specification for Use, EPA Region II's EMS Model, the Department of Justice's Model, and typical safety and health models. They have been customized to reflect Cornell as a university with many diverse individuals and groups interacting and working to meet Cornell's mission. The Elements are based on a Plan - Do - Check - Improve cycle of continuous improvement, as shown below.
More detail surrounding the CMS Elements, including the requirements of each element, can be viewed here (pdf).
While there are sixteen individual elements, as a part of a management system they are each relevant to one another. When developing and considering one element, it is important to understand how that element relates to each of the other fifteen. A single point lesson has been developed to help demonstrate the interconnectedness of the CMS Elements. CMS Element Linkage Lesson.
