Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care

Aspect
A process or procedure that may result in an impact to the environment

Assessment
An evaluation or measurement to determine regulatory compliance or CMS conformance conducted internally to Cornell, whether by the unit involved or other Cornell employees (compare audit and inspection)

CMS Tool
Any software or computer program (proprietary or developed in-house), measuring standard, manual, template, or other resource, that is adopted and deployed, individually or in combination, to serve the CMS. Return to top

Compliance
Meeting the requirements specified by government regulation

Conformance
The adherence of program administration and implementation to the methods and structures prescribed by the CMS (compare compliance).

Cornell Management System
A set of management processes and procedures that integrate compliance and selected other objectives into day-to-day decisions and practices to benefit organizational performance. The system distributes responsibility throughout the organization, monitors performance and initiates corrective and preventative actions.

External Review
A formal review conducted by an outside agent retained by the university to determine compliance with regulatory and/or internally required standards (compare assessment and inspection). This may be performed under attorney-client privilege. This may be called an audit to prepare for a submission to regulators.

Impact
The specific actual or potential effect(s) of processes and procedures on the environment and on human health and safety (compared with aspect, above)

Inspection
A site visit conducted by regulatory authorities to determine compliance

Operating Procedure
A specific action or set of actions required by the organization to achieve operational or program results

Organizational Development (OD)
In the context of the CMS development, this involves setting of objectives, strategy and tactics from concept through implementation, to assure a successful system. OD entails everything from integration into existing systems to employee motivation and commitment.

Pilot Project
A trial deployment of the CMS, or elements of the CMS, during the development stage of the CMS, for the purpose of developing the CMS

Program
A system for managing objectives related to specific environmental media or hazard type

Program Administrator
Individual or group designated to conduct the central administration of a program (as opposed to the management of the program at the unit level)Return to top

SP
Standard Procedure

System Procedure
A specific action or set of actions required by the organization to achieve organizational results

Unit
An identifiable operating entity of the university (college, department, etc.) that is responsible for managing the implementation of university objectives

Voluntary Undertaking
An activity carried out that is not required by federal, state or local law. Examples include best management practices to reduce university liability, and beyond compliance efforts for sustainability and environmental stewardship. Return to top
